Founded in January 2000 by the late Rabbi Alan Lew z"l and Norman Fischer, Makor Or offers meditation on Thursdays at 8:00 am at the Jewish Community Center of San Francisco, 3200 California St., SF. Meditation is also held on Fridays at 5:50 pm at Congregation Beth Sholom, 301 14th Avenue, SF. Services follow. These sessions are free and open to the public. Day-long retreats are held several times a year, as well as occasional classes on various topics relating to Jewish meditation.
Retreats are led by Norman Fischer, the co-found of Makor Or, Rabbi Dorothy Richman, Interim Executive Director and Rabbi in Residence at Berkeley Hillel. Rabbi Richman also served at Congregation Beth Sholom as Assistant Rabbi with Rabbi Lew, and Rabbi Aaron Philmus of Beth Sholom. Weeky meditation is led by the Director of Makor Or, Pamela Reitman, who was a student of Rabbi Lew's for many years, or other senior students.
Makor Or is a program of the Taube-Koret Center for Jewish Peoplehood at the San Francisco Jewish Community Center.
The Fall retreat schedule is as follows: September 5, October 24, November 28. There will be a Shabbat retreat December 17-18.
