On May 4th, 2017 at 8pm at Zellerbach Hall, Berkeley Symphony will present their final concert of the 2016/17 season entitled, "Remembrance".

Shostakovich's choral masterpiece Symphony No. 13, "Babi Yar" is a memorial setting of Yevgeny Yevtushenko's poetry commemorating the World War II massacre of more than 30,000 Jews in Kiev in 1941. The Symphony's powerful musical denunciation of anti-Semitism and message that hope overcomes despair still resonates today.

Praised by Joshua Kosman of the SF Chronicle as "a remarkable talent," guest conductor Christian Reif returns to lead Russian bass soloist Denis Sedov and Bay Area men's choral ensembles prepared by Marika Kuzma, chorusmaster. The performance will begin with dramatic readings of the Yevtushenko's poems set in the five movements of the symphony.
