Get your open ears and open minds on for an experimental-meets-traditional evening of music from a who's-who of local performer/composers working with widely varying genres and instrumentations. Curated by beloved Bay Area electronic diva Amy X Neuburg, expect a very X-esque evening of solos, duos, typos, and mojos… and show tunes! Of course!
Featured Guest Artists:
- Amanda Chaudhary, manipulating a big bunch of electronic gadgets
- Alex Kelly, cello with electronics, blending 21st century soundscapes with jazz and klezmer
- Solstice, a female vocal ensemble with a world-y and wonderful repertoire
Each artist's performance will be preceded by a short informal interview with Amy, and a final set will bring everyone together in various combinations to join her in songs by Jewish folks (no shortage of those!), including a "tutti" finale.
About the Featured Guest Artists:
Amanda Chaudhary is a composer/performer, keyboardist and visual/sound artist specializing in contemporary and electronic music. Her solo work involves analog synthesis, custom software, computers and mobile devices for new modes of expression. Amanda's visually captivating performances often incorporate folk and toy instruments from around the world, along with jazz, dance music and other idiomatic styles. Amanda is the author of the popular blog CatSynth, where she discusses music and art (and cats).
Dr. Alex Kelly is a San Francisco based cellist, composer, and educator working in a variety of genres and styles including classical, new music, jazz, world, electronic, newgrass, rock, etc. His live-looping solo show has been seen in venues ranging from Davies Symphony Concert Hall to Yosemite mountaintops. Alex teaches at the College of Marin, and performs with a large array of ensembles from symphony orchestras to new music ensembles, string quartets, and rock bands. He has premiered over a thousand new works.
The multiple-prize-winning Solstice vocal ensemble has enthralled audiences with their precise and passionate treatment of music for women's voices since 1996. With a diverse repertoire ranging from Bartók to Björk, Palestrina to Paul Simon, Solstice shares the music they love from around the world and through the ages, and they are committed to performing new works by and for women. Solstice has premiered two works by Amy: the song cycle "Fill as Desired" with live looping, and "Gehim Vaa" for six voices and six cell phones.
About the Guest Curator:
Amy X Neuburg has brought her irreverently entertaining avant-cabaret songs to clubs, festivals, and concert halls throughout the U.S. and abroad, as a soloist and in commissions from the San Francisco Chamber Orchestra, the SF Girls Chorus, the Paul Dresher Ensemble, and Del Sol String Quartet, among many others.
